Devotees bid adieu to Ganpati (Finally, Solitude In The Sea)
| Amidst drumbeats and chants of Ganpati Bappa Moriya, devotees in Maharashtra bid farewell to their favourite deity today as thousands of Ganesh idols were taken out for immersion into the sea under unprecedented security. As the 10-day Ganesh festival drew to a close, the idols of the God of Wisdom, in different shapes and sizes, were being taken to various sea-fronts, including Dadar, Girgaum, Juhu and Marve, for the visarjan.
The immersion processions would go on till early tomorrow morning, as some of the city’s well-known Ganeshas, such as Lalbaugcha Raja, pass their way through streets and bylanes, stopping at every locality to enable people to pay their respects.
According to the police, more than 1.25 lakh idols would be immersed by the end of the day.
This year, a heavy police presence was evident, especially at major points such as Shivaji Park, Dadar sea face, Worli, Giragaum and Juhu, in view of the threat perception. Apart from the city’s police force, an additional force of 2,400 policemen from other parts of the state have been deployed in the city.
In addition, 10 companies of the State Reserve Police Force, six CRPF companies, three of the RAF, 800 home guards, 300 civil defence and 500 private security guards have been deployed. In all, 43,000 security personnel and more than 50,000 volunteers were out on the streets. |

"Sound of the Valley" will be on September 3rd
Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia,Pt. Shivkumar Sharma and Pt. Bhawani Shankar Kathak will perform in "Sound of the Valley" in Pune Festival 2006.
 |
 |
 |
| Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia |
| The greatest living master of Bansuri Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia will perform in "Sound of the valley" on 3rd September 2006 in Festival. Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia is known internationally as the greatest living master of Bansuri, the North Indian bamboo flute. Chaurasia is among a few but growing classicists who have made a conscious effort to reach out and expand the audience for classical music. He is probably the most accessible Hindustani musician who has done a lot to popularize Bansuri and classical music among the masses. |
|
 |
| Shivkumar Sharma |
According to me, Music is not for entertainment. It was my life-long dream to play such kind of music which will make the listeners forget to clap; which will make them silent. My dream came true, once.
I played one raga, while the listeners immersed deep into meditation and I experienced a state of thoughtlessness.
To state that Pandit Shivkumar Sharma has created history in the world of music, is an understatement, an inadequate attempt to capture the maestro’s achievements and contributions. After all how many musicians can boast of single handedly bringing forth an obscure, almost unknown instrument to the level of being “indispensable” on the concert platform! Musicians and their instruments do become synonyms, but how often does an instrument acquire an identity because of a musician!

| Pt. Bhawani Shankar Kathak |
Pt. Bhawani Shankar Kathak, aka Bhawani Prasad Kathak, is a percussionist par excellence. He is the unparalleled pakhawaj (two headed hand drum) maestro, who learnt both pakhawaj and tabla from his father starting at the tender age of 5. He is trained in the style of the Jaipur Gharana (school). Pt. Bhawani Shankar enhanced his skill under the tutelage of Pt. Shivlalji Kathak of Ajrada Gharana. He has given a number of public performances at prestigious venues like the Gunidas Festival, Khajuraho Festival, Dover Lane Festival and similar others. He has won several prestigious awards such as the Pandit Jasraj Gaurav Puraskar (2002) and the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Academy Award (2003.) |

A dancer by profession, Meenakshi, after she won the prestigeous "Ms. India" competition, decided to make it big in the Bollywood and was quite impressive acting in different kind of roles with all the actors of her time before she faded as quickly after her tryst with marraige to Mr. Harish Mysore causing another damage to the Film Industry which has been pretty well habituated to losing a few female artists to wedding, of course.
Meenakshi had a classy touch in her action on screen. So flamboyant on and off the screen, she seemed to have enjoyed every moment during her career in Bollywood the she has no regrets at all for quitting the Film Industry that had given her joys of life. |

| ABOUT PUNE FESTIVAL |
Festival History
Lokmanya Tilak was witness in 1892 where he saw the grand scale on which the Ganesh festival was celebrated in Gwalior and the enthusiastic participation of people therein. This alone inspired him to make the Ganesh festival a public event in Maharashtra. He saw an urgent need to reshape the Indian society based on our own heritage and philosophy. He severely criticised the blind imitation of western ways and said that it amounted to spiritual and moral bankruptcy.
Tilak wished to bring about social change for political reasons too. He was convinced that social change was the key to political awareness. The country was under a foreign rule. It was necessary to arouse the masses to oppose the tyrannical British Rule. It was necessary to stir the masses and mobilise public opinion for national ends. To achieve the desired result it was necessary to awaken the masses and what else would be fit than the already popular Ganesh festival?
