Malhar - Rhythm Of The Rain - Enthralls Audiences During Pune Festival 2004
Shivkumar Sharma’s santoor, Shafaat Ahmed Khan’s tabla and Taufiq Qureshi’s percussion - all of these competed for attention on Sunday’s show of Pune Festival at the Ganesh Kala Krida Manch.
With Malhar as their theme the musicians built up the atmosphere of the monsoon, from the first light showers to a thunderous downpour, through masterful strokes on their instruments much to the delight of the audience. Next on stage was the pretty and graceful Prachee Shah, who showed how she is just as good a dancer as she is an actress. Starting with a composition set to the abhang Mage ubha Mangesh, Pudhe ubha Mangesh, Prachee went on to perform a few traditional Kathak sequences and ended with an impressive choreography which invoked the rains. In continuation of the theme, classical vocalist Ustad Rashid Khan too sang an ode to the monsoon and ended with a short soheli. An evening where melody and rhythm ruled.
